Introduction to Fly Fishing on Vancouver Island

May 11 & 12: Coombs Fairground, Arrowsmith Hall, doors open at 8:30 AM
May 13 stream ecology: Little Qualicum Fish Hatchery 5:30 - 8:00 PM
May 14 fly casting lesson: Location T.B.A. 6:00 - 8:00 PM

This course is for anyone interested in learning to fly fish or for people who are new to fly fishing on Vancouver Island.

At the end of the course students will:
• Have general knowledge of Vancouver Island fish, where and when to find them
• Be aware of fish habitat requirements and community conservation initiatives
• Be familiar with fly fishing tackle and how to choose equipment
• Be able to tie essential knots for attaching lines and flies
• Be familiar with types of flies and their uses
• Have learned fundamentals of fly casting and drills for practicing on their own
• Have learned about aquatic insects in streams: identification and habitat
• How to fly fish safely and ethically

A comprehensive course manual is available to download for free online in the members only section of the club’s website. It is also available as a printed hard copy for $40.00.

Note: Class size is limited to 22 students and seats will be filled on a First-Come, First-Served basis. Fly casting equipment is provided for lessons.
