Becoming and Belonging Youth Film and Photography FestivalBecoming and Belonging Youth Film and Photography Festival

On May 26, 2016 The Becoming and Belonging Research Project will host a community event at the Parksville Community & Conference Centre. This event celebrates Oceanside youths' perspectives on the mental health challenges youth can face as well as their recommendations for a more inclusive community.

A series of short digital stories (films) and a photovoice gallery, both created by youth participants will be featured. Interested members of the public will have the opportunity to contribute to a community conversation about the mental health challenges of youth and to suggest changes that will enhance supports for youth in the Oceanside community. Also, hip hop artist Prince SirReal will perform, sharing his story and his art and highlighting the importance of addressing mental health issues with youth.

Hosts are community partners and the Becoming and Belonging Research Team that includes youth from Parksville and Qualicum. The Becoming and Belonging Project began last June and is funded by the Vancouver Foundation and Island Health. Since last June, the project has trained a team of youth researchers who have gathered youth perspectives on mental health through interviews, focus groups and a range of arts based methods. The research project is a collaboration of the Family Resource Association (FRA), the Centre for Healthy Communities Research, Island Health and School District 69.
