RLC Park Services is a strong believer in the importance of children, families and people of all ages having a chance to experience the outdoors and the joy of camping. It’s central to what we do as Park Operators on Vancouver Island and is also the reason why we have kept our Nature Houses open and programs running with zero government funding. There are many families who can’t make it out to our parks for that camping and nature learning experience because they are deep into the worst struggle imaginable: their child’s cancer battle. Tour de Rock raises money to send these families to Camp Goodtimes. This camp is specially designed and staffed to accommodate kids with cancer and their families and allows these families to experience the joy of camping with the reassurance of this support. RLC Park Services motto is “Go Camp! Go Learn! Go Play!” and we believe through fundraising for one week of our summer for Tour de Rock we are helping many families on Vancouver Island to have a chance to do just that.
By putting out the challenge to try to ride as many laps as possible of the campground during this week, it provides an opportunity for children to feel as though they are making a difference in a struggle that is out of their control. Each year we have seen over 1000 people (all ages, not just kids) participate in riding the campground loop and having their photo taken in the blue jersey. We hope this year will be no different. With our donation drive it is also a chance for campers, visitors and members of the community to help be a part of accomplishing a goal. During our event, for every $1 raised, RLC Park Services matches it with an additional $1 donation.
