WILL MILLAR - Scenes from my Irish Roving

In Scenes from my Irish Roving, Will Millar, as the former leader of The Irish Rovers has now returned to his first creative love of Painting. In this he is a voyager into the Ireland of his youth, portraying the country in the 1950's. Before glass supermarkets and traffic jams clogged up small villages. Before, as he puts it, "Ireland rushed into the Euro world like a Celtic tiger." Over the years, Millar nurtured and developed his special talent into a style that evolved uninfluenced and unencumbered.

In truth, his unique style owes much to the fact that his art college was in the Irish countryside. His emotionally charged portraits of pubs and bucolic scenes depict an era that has vanished in Ireland. The artworks in "Scenes from my Irish Rovings" are paintings of a by-gone era: plough horses, steam trains, hay-raking by hand, gypsy caravans and tinkers (the original Irish Rovers), old girls in their Sunday-best hats playing cards in a pub, the men with their cloth caps and pipes, horse fairs and farmers' markets, old storytellers and donkeys on the beach, jigs and reels and shepherds with their dogs. All his cherished memories come lovingly to life on his canvas.

A group of art friends who have painted and shared their passion for several years have become known as the "Wet Paint Artists" and have hosted an annual art show and sale each August for the last 5 years. The artists, from Comox, Black Creek, and Campbell River, paint together on a regular basis, stimulating and encouraging the individuality and vision of each artist.

The art of Loree Cunningham, Sonia Hauser, Shelly Hollingshead, Jenny Mitchell, Michelle Ohlsson, Lesley Rieck and Kathi Rudko represents a wide range of experience and an eclectic mix of subjects, styles and media. While our coastal environment and natural world can be seen reflected in many of the artists' works, the style and interpretation of each painter is unique. Collage, oil, acrylic, oil and cold wax, and mixed media pieces will form this exciting display.

Over the last few years many of the group members have been exploring more abstract and mixed media applications, and several have taken courses with acclaimed national and international artists such as Nicholas Wilton, Jane Davies, Suzanne Northcott, Sheila Davis and Claire Desjardins. They are enjoying the excitement of these new directions as well as continuing their more traditional landscape, still life and figurative work.

MAC PERFORMANCE SERIES 2017/2018 presents:

REID JAMIESON (with Carolyn Victoria Mill) in Concert

Friday, JUNE 22nd, 7pm Tickets $18 ($15 OCAC)

REID JAMIESON (Vancouver / Vinyl Cafe) -

"Gorgeous, sun-struck acoustic soul" - Globe & Mail

Vancouver's Reid Jamieson Band are prolific songbirds who loves to sing. Now performing as an acoustic duo with his long-time songwriting partner and saucy wife, Carolyn Victoria Mill, they are committed to making music that matters and moves us. Known for his compelling vocal performances and her therapeutic lyrics, Reid has appeared regularly on CBC's Vinyl Cafe with Stuart McLean, and has recorded with Cowboy Junkies, Sarah Harmer and members of Blue Rodeo and Be Good Tanyas. Alongside award winning original music, they recently released two tasty tributes: The Presley Sessions Revisited, a musical love letter to the 50s era greats; and the latest, a luminous homage to the master of song Leonard Cohen titled DEAR LEONARD: The Cohen Collection. Turning the master into the muse with seven compelling covers plus the haunting title track, an original open letter to the man himself. Featuring Anne Lindsay (Jim Cuddy, James Taylor, Led Zeppelin) on burning violin. Don't miss the opportunity to catch them live!

"Prepare to be surprised" - Vancouver Province

"Arresting... dazzling voice" - Toronto Sun

"After Reid appeared on the Vinyl Cafe we received tremendous feedback from our audience. He stole the show...He blew me away." Stuart McLean - CBC Vinyl Cafe

"I don't know how I missed it, but somewhere between the release of his debut CD and what could be mistaken for a simple holiday album, Reid Jamieson has become the greatest Canadian pop singer ever." - NoDepression

"Jamieson has a voice to bring the songs to life, in a manner that is both befitting of the weight of this cannon and to bring something new to the party. His choices are admirable, and brave, but you can be when you are this fine. It is an elegant, considered, beautiful reimagining of some real pearls." - Americana UK

"Their overall approach and the recordings I've heard literally scream authenticity and devotion to what suits their rich voices so well.... Magical, and modern, albeit with a retro country feel that evokes other musical couples - Johnny & June, or Tammy & George. " - Calgary Herald
