Depending on the situation, you may need to shelter in place or evacuate. Here are quick links to guides for different scenarios:
Earthquakes can happen without warning, so if you feel the ground shake, drop, cover, and hold on right away — don’t wait for an alert. The Earthquake Early Warning system may give you a few seconds of notice through your phone, TV, or radio, but action should be immediate either way. Before an earthquake, secure heavy furniture, appliances, and shelves to reduce injuries and damage. Have an emergency kit ready with enough supplies for at least three days, and know how to turn off utilities if needed. Afterward, stay put if your home is safe and check trusted sources for updates.
If a wildfire is nearby, follow all Evacuation Alerts and Orders from your local authority or band office and leave immediately if instructed. Keep windows and doors closed to reduce smoke exposure, and use a HEPA air filter if you have one. Limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous activity, and have medications ready if you have a respiratory condition. Stay informed through Emergency Info BC, the BC Wildfire Service, or your municipality’s official channels. Only call 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies; for health advice, call 8-1-1 or visit HealthLink BC.
Floods can happen year-round in B.C., with the most severe often occurring in spring and early summer due to rain and snowmelt. If you live in a flood-prone area, have a plan and prepare your home by moving valuables off the ground and storing emergency supplies. During a flood, stay away from fast-moving water, follow evacuation instructions, and never drive through flooded roads. Once the water recedes, return home only when it’s safe, and use caution while cleaning up. For updates, check Emergency Info BC or your local authority’s channels.
Extreme weather in B.C. can range from heavy snow and high winds to prolonged heat waves and drought. In winter, stay safe by avoiding travel during storms, securing loose items outside, and keeping emergency supplies on hand in case of power outages. During extreme heat, drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity, and stay in cool indoor spaces when possible. Check in on neighbours, especially seniors or those with health conditions, and follow weather alerts from Environment Canada and Emergency Info BC.
We want every visitor to feel safe, informed, and supported during their time in Parksville Qualicum Beach, even when the unexpected happens.
First and most importantly, follow the same evacuation alerts and safety instructions as local residents. If you're staying in a hotel, campground, or vacation rental, check in with your host or front desk staff for updates. They can tell you whether your location is currently affected and what next steps may be needed. If you're advised to evacuate, follow instructions carefully and go to the nearest reception centre or designated safe area. Staff can help you find out where to go and how to get there.
During an emergency, you might experience road closures, ferry delays, power outages, or changes to planned activities. Having flexible travel plans, knowing alternate routes, and staying connected can make a big difference. For the most accurate updates, check Emergency Info BC for evacuation notices and safety information, and DriveBC for current road conditions. It’s also helpful to follow local government websites and official social media accounts for real-time alerts.
If you're unsure where to find medical care, emergency supplies, or general assistance, stop by a local Visitor Centre or ask your accommodation provider for help. For non-emergency health questions, call 8-1-1 to speak with a nurse or health specialist.
Even in uncertain moments, this community looks out for one another. If you need help, don’t hesitate to ask.
After an emergency:
After a major event, one of the best ways to help is by supporting the community whether that means volunteering your time, donating to local organizations, or shopping at small businesses impacted by the disruption. Every little bit helps in getting our region back on its feet. For ways to get involved or give back, check with local municipalities, non-profits, or neighbourhood groups organizing recovery efforts.
Parksville Qualicum Beach is also part of a province-wide commitment to tourism resiliency. The Tourism Emergency Management Committee, led by Destination BC, works with regional partners to help destinations prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies. The Tourism Emergency Management Framework outlines this shared approach to keeping BC’s visitor economy strong, even in challenging times.
