With its varied terrain and moderate but steady incline, Notch Hill is a local favourite for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a scenic, low-traffic alternative to busier hiking destinations. It offers a peaceful nature retreat off the coast, easily accessible via BC-19 South.
The trail is open year-round, but spring to early fall offers optimal weather and visibility. Rain may create muddy conditions on gravel descents. Though it’s important to note that Fairwinds has the right to close trails on their property if the wildfire risk is high.
Yes! Dogs are allowed on leashes. Please be responsible and clean up after your dog; leave the trail beautiful for everyone to enjoy.
From Nanoose Bay on Northwest Bay Road, turn onto Powder Point Road. After ~3.5 km, you’ll see the trailhead pullout and a parking area on the right.
The trail is accessible for families and beginner hikers, though younger children may need assistance on uphill or gravel sections.
Expect 1–1.5 hours over roughly 3 km with moderate elevation. The return is gradual but contains loose gravel, so watch your footing and take it as slowly as necessary. You’ll want to go slow to soak in the views anyway.
You’ll experience a Garry oak and Arbutus ecosystem, transitioning through forest and open meadows. There are occasional steep sections and loose gravel, especially when going downhill.
