Arrowsmith CPR Regional Trail
The historic Arrowsmith CPR Regional Trail is about a one-hour drive from Parksville Qualicum Beach and a must-see for hikers. This trail was created in 1912 by the Canadian Pacific Railway and winds its way up Mount Arrowsmith for 10-kilometres.
Hikers can take the four-to-five hour loop hike called Judge's Route to reach lush meadows and alpine ponds with spectacular views of the island. With the proper equipment and expertise, more adventurous climbers can continue to ascend the summit at 1,819 meters.
Big Qualicum River Regional Trail
Following the banks of the Big Qualicum River, this trail begins at the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Big Qualicum Hatchery complex where fall salmon runs attract wildlife and curious visitors alike, and ends before Horne Lake Caves Road. Shaded paths stretch along the river’s edge beneath a canopy of trees, perfect for quiet observation. The level, well-maintained gravel surface also makes it a popular choice for cyclists and casual walkers.
Coombs to Parksville Rail Trail
The Coombs to Parksville Rail Trail is an accessible trail connecting the communities of Coombs and Parksville with a smooth path. Ideal for walking and cycling, the trail begins near the dog park in Springwood Park in Parksville, making it easy to treat your pup to a rewarding 7-km walk.
Englishman River Falls Provincial Park
For family-friendly hiking close to Parksville Qualicum Beach, visit Englishman River Falls Provincial Park Three kilometres of trails weave through the old-growth trees and offer payoff views of the upper and lower falls. In the summertime, locals like to cool off in the clear, deep waters of the swimming hole below the lower falls.
Lighthouse Country Regional Trail
Separated into north and south sections, this trail system showcases the beautiful Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem with a mix of forest footpaths and accessible features. The north loop, connected to Wildwood Community Park, provides a soft-surface route for walkers and horseback riders. Along the south section is a wheelchair accessible trail with picnic tables, wood carvings, and a continuous tapping rail designed to aid visually and balance-impaired visitors.
Little Mountain Lookout
Little Mountain Lookout features 4 trails of varying lengths and difficulty to choose from, all winding through peaceful forest. These trails are popular with both hikers and mountain bikers, and all lead to a dramatic lookout point. From the summit, enjoy panoramic views of forested valleys and towering peaks of Mount Arrowsmith, especially striking at sunrise or sunset.
Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park
This forested park is home to a mix of waterfalls, rock cliffs, and towering old-growth Douglas firs. Around 6 kilometres of trails wind through the forest and along the river, with several lookout points that provide impressive views of the upper and lower falls. The main loop trail begins at the day-use area, though campers can also access the network directly from the park’s well-shaded campground.
Nile Creek
Nile Creek is a favourite among locals for hiking, running, walking, and waterfall views. The trail follows the creek through dense forest, where moss-covered boulders and carpets of ferns line the path. Along the way, hikers will encounter a series of log crossings.
The Notch
The Notch trail leads hikers through a Garry oak meadow and arbutus forest ecosystem. While hiking, keep an eye out for wildflowers blooming across the open slopes, adding bursts of colour to the rocky landscape. After a short scramble to the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Mt. Arrowsmith Biosphere Region before descending through a cooler, shaded forest.
Parksville Qualicum Beach Wildlife Management Area Bird Trail
This curated bird trail invites birders and nature enthusiasts to explore key bird watching locations across coastal and inland ecosystems in Parksville Qualicum Beach and nearby areas of Eastern Vancouver Island. Stops include Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, the Englishman River Estuary, Parksville Community Park, French Creek Estuary, North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre, and more. Each site provides visitors the chance to observe resident and migratory species in their natural surroundings.
Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park
Tide pools, sandy beaches, and shaded forest paths make this trail a favourite for all ages. This route circles through coastal woodland before emerging at the expansive beach. Known for its birdwatching opportunities and scenic shoreline, it’s an easy way to spend an hour in one of the region’s most iconic parks.
Top Bridge Regional Trail
Top Bridge Regional Trail is a 4-km multi-use trail connecting Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park to the Top Bridge Crossing over the Englishman River. Hikers can enjoy the shaded forest and riverside views, with plenty of places to pause and take in the scenery. It also offers access to Englishman River Regional Park for those who want to extend their outing.
